National Target 12: By 2020, the potential risks resulting from biotechnology use and placement on the market of its products have been minimized and/or eliminated.
T he government of Rwanda recognizes the potential of biotechnology as a tool for improving productivity, especially in the agricultural sector in a bid to improve rural livelihoods, food security, and reduce the high incidence of poverty. However, it also acknowledges that there are risks associated with the extensive adoption and the use of biotechnology. The main thrust of this target is to build/strengthen Rwanda’s policy, legal institutional, and technical capacity for effective direction and regulation of the use of biotechnology (RNBF, 2005).
