The present study is the first detailed inventory of the four most important wetlands in Rwanda, Kamiranzovu Complex, Rugezi Complex, Rweru-Mugesera Complex and Akagera Complex.

The objectives of the present study are:

  • To evaluate the diversity of vascular plants, amphibians, reptiles, birds and small mammals in the four key marshlands of Kamiranzovu, Rugezi, Rweru-Mugesera and Akagera
  • To collect biodiversity data to assist in guiding conservation activities and management of Rwanda’s key wetlands
  • To enhance scientific information and capacity of Rwanda by incorporating the collected data in the national biodiversity information system
  • Through consultation and support from local experts and local people, to collect information on major socio-economic conditions, human disturbance, and anthropogenic threats to the ecosystem and species.
