ARCOS and TNC signs an MoU to collaborate in supporting conservation efforts in Africa Great Lakes and Albertine Rift regions
"If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself." This quote by the legendary entrepreneur Henry Ford reiterates the importance of collaboration. When it comes to conservation and especially when the area of concern is as big as the Great Lakes region, then success will necessarily require this important ingredient of all conservation work. Realizing this, the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 17th December 2015 at Nairobi to collaborate in supporting conservation efforts in Africa Great Lakes and the Albertine Rift regions.

Learning more about bamboo, a key gorilla food
During our nearly 50 years of studying the mountain gorillas, the Fossey Fund has learned a lot about the plants they consume and the interactions between distribution of food plants, habitat suitability and the gorillas’ movements. Although the gorillas consume up to 200 plant species, bamboo is a key food and very important for a number of reasons. - See more at: http://gorillafund.org/news--events/learning-more-about-bamboo#sthash.eiWEpi8I.dpuf

New coffee variety release in Rwanda
In Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), a new coffee variety called RAB C 15 was released. This variety is almost similar to the farmer preferred varietes Jackosn and BM 139 and it is not only resistant to both CLR (Collee Leaf Rust) and CBD (Coffee Berry Disease) but also quite productive with cup quality attributes remarkably similar to the present commercial varieties.

Lions return to Akagera National Park, Rwanda after an absence of more than 15 years
The seven lions translocated by African Parks, in conjunction with the Rwanda Development Board, from South Africa to Akagera National Park arrived safely in the park, late on Tuesday night. They were immediately released into a specially erected 1,000m² boma, the perimeter of which includes a three-metre high, chain-linked electrified fence. The two males and five females are being quarantined in the boma for a minimum of 14 days after which they will be released into the wilderness of the park. They are being continually monitored by the Akagera park team.

Over 310,000 seedlings to mitigate the local impacts of climate change
Meteorological data and recent events provide glaring evidence that climate change ishappening and that it will particularly affect poorer and natural resources-dependant countries like Rwanda. The observed shift in the occurrence of the rainy seasons and the dry seasons in certain regions of Rwanda distorts agricultural growing seasons and causes confusion among farmers as it affects the timing of field preparation and planting, crop growth, and increasing incidences of crop diseases and pests resulting in lower agricultural yields.

Securing sustainable futures for wetland communities in Lake Victoria Basin
Wetlands and Local Empowerment work hand in hand around the Lake Victoria Basin. Communities around Lake Victoria rely on wetlands for their livelihoods. These wetlands provide important ecosystem services including food, raw materials, fresh water, medicine, wastewater treatment, carbon sequestration, erosion prevention and fertility. They also provide habitats for species and support cultural, recreational and tourism activities. On this 2nd day of February 2016, we celebrate World Wetlands Day and look at how these wetlands are providing sustainable livelihoods for their surrounding communities.

WMBD 2016 Theme: "Illegal killing, taking, and trade of migratory birds"
So that future generations also benefit from natural resources, governments have passed laws – both domestic and international – to ensure sustainability, protecting wild animals including migratory birds by restricting or prohibiting their exploitation. The protection of migratory birds has been coordinated at the international level since the beginning of the twentieth century. Migratory birds were once synonymous with abundance, and seen as a gift coming from the sky. Historically, people have hunted wildlife for a variety of reasons – food and sport - and in the past, such activities were conducted at a scale that was sustainable. In many cases, however, this is no longer true.

Saving water to save gorillas
Gorillas very rarely need to drink water. They usually get all the hydration they need from chewing on lush nettles or wild celery. Humans, however, are another matter. We need water to survive and, with the number of people living around the Virunga National Park increasing by the day, pressure on the natural resources of the region is growing all the time.

REDD+ handed in Paris
It’s been 30 years since the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations launched the Tropical Forestry Action Plan, the first global intergovernmental initiative to halt forest loss. Since then, deforestation has continued unabated, and the latest international effort to stop it – an initiative known as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) – looks no more likely to be effective. Far from protecting the world’s forests, the most notable outcome of these two agreements has been, ironically, the production of reams of expensive consultancy reports.

Small Livestock to Support Economy and Conservation
In the second half of the 20th century, more and more conflicts between local people and park authorities emerged in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Being confronted with local communities that fought back and NGOs that focused on human rights and justice, conservation agencies gradually started to rethink the fortress approach. They realized that control alone was not sufficient and started looking for ways to integrate human development into conservation.

Saving Grauer's gorillas in Congo despite steep decline
Grauer’s gorillas (formerly known as eastern lowland gorillas) are found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and recent reports suggest their population has plummeted by almost 80% in the past two decades. With perhaps as few as 3,800 Grauer's gorillas left, most of them living outside of protected areas, intense conservation on their behalf is necessary, in order to prevent their potential extinction, after years of insecurity, hunting and other threats have decimated their habitat
